Live-in & Home Care

Clinical needs, met at home

Tracheostomy, ventilation, PEG feeding, spinal injury, acquired brain injury — care that would normally mean a unit, delivered in the person's own home by a trained, competency-signed team.

What makes care complex

Complex care means clinical tasks delegated by a healthcare professional and carried out by carers who have been trained and formally assessed as competent to do them — not simply care for someone with a lot of needs.

It usually involves a package built around one person: a small dedicated team, written competencies for every clinical task, oversight from a clinician, and a plan agreed with the commissioning body.

Done properly it lets people live at home who would otherwise be in hospital or a specialist unit. Done badly it is dangerous, which is why the governance around it matters more than anything on this page.

Complex Care may be right if…

  • Ventilation or tracheostomy care is required
  • Nutrition is delivered by PEG, PEJ or NG tube
  • There is a spinal cord injury or acquired brain injury
  • Bowel and bladder management needs trained intervention
  • Epilepsy needs rescue medication and a seizure protocol
  • A discharge is blocked because there is no package in place

What a complex care package includes

A dedicated team

A small, named team trained specifically for this person and this equipment — not a general rota.

Delegated clinical tasks

Carried out only where a clinician has delegated them and competency has been signed off. CONFIRM which delegated clinical tasks Bellus is currently competent to deliver

Clinical oversight

Named clinical responsibility, supervision and spot checks. CONFIRM clinical lead / registered nurse oversight arrangements

Equipment and environment

Working with the community teams on beds, hoists, suction, ventilators and consumables.

Hospital discharge support

Working with the ward, the CCG or ICB and the family to get the package standing before discharge.

Emergency protocols

Written, rehearsed, and known by every member of the team.

Why Bellus

Governance you can inspect

For complex care, the right question is not whether a provider says yes — it is whether they can show you the training records, the competency sign-offs, the supervision schedule and the escalation route. We expect to be asked for all of them.

Common questions

Who pays for complex care at home?
Often NHS Continuing Healthcare, sometimes a joint package with social care, sometimes a personal health budget. We can talk you through which route applies.
Can you take a referral direct from a hospital ward?
Yes — early is better. The sooner we can assess and train, the sooner a discharge date becomes realistic. REFERRALS PHONE
How long does it take to set a package up?
It depends on training and recruitment for the specific clinical tasks. CONFIRM typical lead time from referral to package start
Are your staff nurses?
Complex care is usually delivered by trained care staff working to delegated tasks with clinical oversight, not by registered nurses on every shift. CONFIRM Bellus staffing and nursing model for complex care
What happens if a carer is off sick?
Complex packages need trained cover, so we build the team larger than the rota requires and keep competencies current across it.
Can you support children and young people?
CONFIRM whether Bellus supports under-18s and, if so, which regulated activities apply
