Supported Living

Supported living: frequently asked questions

The questions we get asked most, answered plainly. If yours is not here, ask us — we would rather answer it than have you guess.

Before you read on

Supported living arrangements differ from person to person, so some answers below are necessarily general. Anything specific to a particular person, property or funding route is best answered in a conversation.

Where an answer depends on a fact about Bellus that we have not yet confirmed publicly, you will see it flagged rather than guessed at. We would rather show you a gap than fill it with something that turns out not to be true.

Common questions

The basics

1Is supported living the same as a care home?

No. In supported living you hold your own tenancy and the support is provided separately. In a care home, the accommodation and the care come together under one arrangement.

2Who pays for it?

Housing costs are usually met through Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit. Care and support is funded separately — often by a local authority or an ICB, through Continuing Healthcare, or privately.

3Do I need a social worker to arrange it?

Not necessarily. Many placements are commissioned by a local authority, but self-funders and families can approach us directly.

4Can I have 24-hour support?

Yes, where that is what the assessment supports. That includes waking nights and sleep-in arrangements depending on need.

5Will I have the same support workers?

That is what we plan for. Consistency is one of the strongest predictors of a placement working, so we rota for it deliberately.

6Can I choose my own staff?

You will be involved in matching, and we introduce staff before support starts wherever the timeline allows. We take seriously that this is your home.

7What if I do not get on with someone?

Tell us and we will change it. You should not have to put up with someone in your home who you do not get on with.

8Can my support hours change?

Yes. Needs change in both directions, and hours are reviewed. Increases are subject to funding agreement.

9Is Bellus regulated by the CQC?

CQC REGISTRATION STATUS — registration number, regulated activities and locations. Do not publish a blanket claim.

10What happens if I want to move?

You have the rights of a tenant. If you want to move, we will support a planned transition rather than an abrupt end.

11How do I complain?

Our complaints process is published, and you can raise a concern with the local authority or the CQC at any point. Using it will not affect your support.

12How quickly can support start?

That depends on the property, the funding decision and whether a new staff team is needed. TYPICAL LEAD TIME — confirm a range you can hold

Still have a question?

Ask it. There is no such thing as a question that is too basic, and you will get a plain answer rather than a brochure.
