Working at Bellus

Care work, described honestly

This is a demanding job that a lot of people are bad at and some people are extraordinary at. If you want a recruitment page that pretends otherwise, this will not be it.

What the job actually is

You will support someone to live the life they want, in their own home. Some days that is practical — personal care, medication, cooking, getting to an appointment. Some days it is almost entirely about patience, and knowing when to step back.

It can be physically tiring and emotionally heavy. It can also be one of the few jobs where you can point at the end of a shift and say exactly who is better off because you turned up.

You do not need previous care experience. You do need to be reliable, to be able to hold a boundary kindly, and to be genuinely interested in the person rather than the task list.

Honesty

Who this suits, and who it does not

You will probably do well here if

  • You would rather have a small number of people you know well than a long round of quick calls
  • You are comfortable with the practical realities of personal care
  • You can work to someone else’s routine rather than your own
  • You will speak up when something is not right
  • You want training and are willing to be supervised

This is likely to be the wrong job if

  • You need a predictable desk-hours week — care includes early, late, weekend and night work
  • You want to do things for people to get the shift finished faster
  • You would find it hard to take direction from the person you support
  • You are looking for something temporary to fill a gap — consistency is the whole point

We would rather you decided this was not for you before applying than three weeks in. So would the people we support.

Applying

How the process works

  1. 1

    Get in touch

Apply to a specific vacancy, or email CAREERS EMAIL and tell us what you are looking for.

  2. 2

    A conversation

A screening call about your experience, availability and what you are hoping for.

  3. 3

    Interview

With the manager you would be working to. Ask them hard questions — good candidates do.

  4. 4

    Offer and compliance

Subject to DBS LEVEL, NUMBER OF REFERENCES and right-to-work checks. This takes time and we will keep you updated rather than going quiet.

  5. 5

    Induction

Before you support anyone. CONFIRM INDUCTION LENGTH AND SHADOWING ARRANGEMENTS.

  6. 6

    Your first weeks

Shadowing, then supported shifts, then your own. Nobody is sent in cold.

Worth saying

We would rather be short-staffed than badly staffed

Taking on someone who is not right for this work is not a favour to them, and it is a genuine risk to the people we support. Our recruitment is deliberately slower than some.

Common questions

Questions from applicants

1Do I need experience?

No. Attitude matters more, and we train. Some of the best support workers came from hospitality, retail or teaching.

2Do I need a driving licence?

CONFIRM WHETHER A LICENCE AND VEHICLE ARE REQUIRED, AND MILEAGE ARRANGEMENTS.

3What is a sleep-in?

A shift where you sleep at the service and are available if needed overnight. CONFIRM SLEEP-IN RATES AND ARRANGEMENTS.

4Will I always work with the same people?

That is the aim. Consistency is better for the person supported and better for you.

5Can I work part time?

CONFIRM CONTRACT TYPES AVAILABLE.

6How long does a DBS take?

Usually a few weeks, sometimes longer. We will tell you where it is rather than leaving you guessing.

Think this might be you?

Look at what is currently open, or just email us and say what you are looking for. We would rather hear from you early than not at all.
